How to Calculate Profit in Forex

Every forex profit calculator runs the same two steps. Multiply the price difference by the number of units traded, which gives the profit or loss in the pair's quote currency. Then, if the quote currency is not your account currency, convert it. A sell makes money when the price falls, so its sign is reversed.

Profit = (close price − open price) × lot size × units per lot, reversed for a sell, then converted to your account currency

Example 1: EUR/USD buy on a USD account. 0.50 lots, opened at 1.08500, closed at 1.09250 (illustrative prices, not current quotes).

The price rose 0.00750, which is 75 pips. At 50,000 units that is 0.00750 × 50,000 = $375.00. EUR/USD is quoted in US dollars, so no conversion is needed.

With commission of $7.00 per lot round turn, the cost is 0.50 × $7.00 = $3.50, leaving a net profit of $371.50.

Example 2: USD/JPY sell on a USD account. 1.00 lot, opened at 150.000, closed at 151.200 (illustrative prices).

The price rose 1.200 against a sell, a loss of 120 pips. At 100,000 units that is 1.200 × 100,000 = ¥120,000.

USD/JPY is quoted in yen, so the loss is converted at the close price: ¥120,000 ÷ 151.200 = a loss of $793.65.

Turning an EA's Pip Claims Into Money

Expert Advisor sales pages often quote results in pips, because a pip figure sounds the same whatever size the account traded. It is not a result on its own. 500 pips a month on EUR/USD at 0.01 lots is $50 on a USD account — 500 × $0.10 — and the same 500 pips at 1.00 lot is $5,000. Neither figure says anything about how deep the drawdown went to get there.

Put a claimed pip figure through the calculator at the lot size the vendor actually traded, then ask what the account balance was. A return only means something as a percentage of the capital that produced it, over a verified period. How we test Expert Advisors sets out what we check before we trust a performance figure.

What Changes the Real Profit on a Trade

Commission

On raw-spread accounts, commission is charged per lot and usually quoted per side. The calculator takes it round turn — both sides together — per standard lot. On 10 September 2026 we recorded round-turn commission of $4.50 at Axi, $6.00 at Tickmill and $7.00 at Eightcap and IC Markets on each broker's lowest-spread commission account; the MT5 brokers comparison has each broker's account-by-account pricing.

The spread is already in your prices

A buy opens at the ask and closes at the bid; a sell opens at the bid and closes at the ask. If you enter the prices you were actually filled at, the spread is already counted. Subtract it again and you will understate the profit.

Swap on positions held overnight

A position still open at the broker's daily rollover is charged or paid swap, and one night a week usually carries three days' worth to cover the weekend. For an EA that holds trades for days, swap can be the difference between a small win and a small loss. Enter the total from your trade history.

The conversion rate

Where your account currency is part of the pair, the calculator converts at your close price, as MetaTrader does. Otherwise it pre-fills the European Central Bank's reference rate for the latest published day. That is close enough for planning, but your broker converts at its own rate when the trade closes, so overwrite it with your broker's price for an exact figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate profit in forex?
Take the difference between the close price and the open price, multiply it by the number of units traded, and reverse the sign if the trade was a sell. The result is in the pair's quote currency. If that is not your account currency, convert it at the current exchange rate. A buy of 0.50 lots of EUR/USD opened at 1.08500 and closed at 1.09250 makes 0.00750 × 50,000 = $375.00.
How much is one pip worth?
On any pair quoted in US dollars, such as EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10 on a standard lot, $1 on a mini lot and $0.10 on a micro lot, on a USD account. On other pairs, and on accounts in other currencies, the value depends on an exchange rate, which is why the calculator shows the pip value for your lot size alongside the result.
How do I calculate profit on a sell trade?
The same way, with the sign reversed: a sell makes money when the close price is below the open price. Choose Sell in the calculator and enter the two prices as they were filled. A USD/JPY sell of 1.00 lot opened at 150.000 and closed at 151.200 loses 120 pips, which is ¥120,000, or $793.65 converted at the close price.
Why doesn't the result match the profit in MetaTrader?
Usually one of four things. The prices entered are not the exact fills, which include the spread. Commission or swap has not been entered. The conversion rate differs from the rate your broker used when the trade closed. Or, for gold and other instruments, the contract size differs from your broker's specification.
Does the calculator include commission and swap?
Yes, if you enter them. Commission is entered per standard lot, round turn, in your account currency, and is multiplied by your lot size. Swap is entered as the total charged or paid on the trade, and can be negative. The result shows the gross profit before them and the net profit after.
Can I calculate gold (XAU/USD) profit?
Yes. Choose XAU/USD, enter the lot size and prices, and check the contract size, which is pre-filled with 100 ounces per lot. Contract sizes vary by broker, so confirm yours in your platform's symbol specification. The result is shown as a price move rather than in pips.
Is it free, and do you store what I enter?
Free, with no signup. Every calculation runs in your own browser, so the figures you type are never sent to us or anyone else and are not stored. The only thing the page loads from outside is the public European Central Bank reference rate table, requested from Frankfurter, an open-source exchange rate service.

Before You Trust an EA's Profit Figures

A correct profit figure is worth very little if the EA producing it was never worth running. We publish two free documents that cover the checks we run before we will cover a product at all: the EA Red Flag Checklist, and a Broker and VPS Quick Reference covering the conditions an EA actually needs to perform as advertised.

Both are yours the moment you submit — the download page opens immediately, with no waiting and nothing to find in your inbox. The marketing email tick-box is optional and you can leave it blank.

Profit Is the Easy Number

A profit calculator tells you what a trade made. It says nothing about whether the Expert Advisor that placed it will keep making them, or what it risked along the way. As at September 2026, none of the eight Expert Advisors we have reviewed holds our Recommended verdict, and each review shows the arithmetic, the account each figure came from and the date it was read.

If you are checking a vendor's results, start with the account behind them. How we test Expert Advisors sets out what we look for before we trust a figure.

This tool performs arithmetic on figures you supply and runs entirely in your browser. Exchange rates are European Central Bank reference rates, published once each working day, and are not live prices. It is not financial advice and it is not a recommendation to trade. Your broker's profit and loss can differ from this figure with its exact fills, contract sizes, conversion rate, commission, swap and rounding. Trading forex and CFDs carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors.
